General Care Guidelines for Bedding
There are many components that go into making your bed a stylish and restful haven. To preserve their longevity, it's important to know how to properly care for them. This guide will help you understand each piece's specific instructions.
Washing
Sheets & Pillowcases: Make sure to machine wash sheets in cold water on a gentle cycle separately from other items (such as towels, clothing, etc.) Mixing loads will cause pilling of the sheets, so wash separately so they have room to freely move in the washer.
Comforters & Bedding Ensembles: Dry cleaning is usually recommended. However, if home laundering is called for, most likely machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
Decorative Pillows: Decorative pillows are likely to be spot clean only, do not launder.
Pillows: Polyester and cotton-blend pillows can usually be machine washed cold, separately on a gentle cycle. It is recommended to use half the amount of detergent you normally would and run an extra spin cycle to ensure extra water is removed. Also, to ensure your washer is balanced, wash two pillows on each side at the same time. Other types of pillows (feather, memory foam, etc.) should be brought to a dry cleaner or spot cleaned only.
Mattress Pads: Most mattress pads are likely to have some sort of fill or insert for additional comfort and support. The inserts and fill are not meant for laundering, so spot clean them only. If the mattress cover is separate from the fill or insert (or if your mattress pad doesn't have one), it can most likely be home laundered. In most cases, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
Drying
Sheets & Pillowcases: Tumble dry on low heat and remove immediately to prevent having to iron.
Comforters & Bedding Ensembles: Dry cleaning is usually recommended. However, if home laundering is called for, most likely tumble dry on a low heat setting.
Pillows: Polyester and cotton-blend pillows can usually be machine dried on a tumble dry, low heat setting. Place a couple clean tennis balls (or one clean tennis shoe) in the dryer with the pillows to help fluff them. Other types of pillows (feather, memory foam, etc.) should be brought to a dry cleaner or spot cleaned only.
Mattress Pads: If the mattress cover is separate from the fill or insert (or your mattress pad doesn't have one), the pad can be line/flat dried or tumble dried on low heat.
Ironing
Sheets & Pillowcases: Fold in half to save on your ironing time. Be sure to follow instructions when it comes to the iron's heat level.
Comforters & Bedding Ensembles: If the piece allows for home laundering, follow the ironing instructions. Most likely they will call for light ironing only.
