Always apply your makeup with your destination for the day in mind. Apply lighter makeup for day or office wear. Conversely, if you're spending the evening out or attending a special event, you'll want to increase the amount and intensity of makeup to play up your best features.
Daytime Makeup
Always begin with a clean and sufficiently moisturized face. Your first and foremost concern should be to emphasize your best features in the most natural way possible. You will also want to keep your routine as simple and short as possible.
Office Makeup
Neutral colors applied with a light hand are perfect for an office environment. Following trends is acceptable within reason, but as a general rule, keeping your makeup toned down will look much more professional and attractive under the glare of fluorescent lighting. Avoid harsh colors or enhancing any particular feature. Finish your look with a lipstick that complements and is very close to your lip color.
Transitioning from Daytime to Evening Makeup
Whether you decide to start with a fresh face or transition from your day makeup, the premise is the same. You will want to add drama to your face with darker than usual colors, and choose one feature that you desire to emphasize. Make your eyes shimmer or smolder; Or use a deep and delicious hue for your lips. As a rule, if you choose to emphasis your eyes, have a neutral lip. Conversely, if you want your pout to stand out, keep your eye makeup palette neutral. When you decide to emphasize a particular feature, bold is encouraged, but definitely find the fine line and don't cross it into a look that's obviously over-done. Other ways to transition into the night would be to make use of more shimmery eyeshadows than you would use for the day. Use blush to play up your cheek bones and facial contours. And finally, use a bolder, darker lip color than your daytime lipstick.
Glamour Makeup for Special Occasions
Even more formal than an evening out, special occasions are the perfect reason to refine your makeup repertoire. Go to a spa or have a spa day in your bathroom. Make sure to exfoliate and moisturize for a beautifully luminous base for your makeup. Follow the tips for evening makeup, but this time, add a little more va va voom with shimmer, sparkle and glitter eyeshadows, lipstick/lip gloss, or body powder. Just remember to keep the special effects in moderation and you'll truly shine.
