If you're hosting a dinner party or a holiday meal, you may find this table setting useful. The semi-formal table setting builds on the casual setting by adding a few extra pieces. If guests will be drinking more than one beverage at the tablewater and wine for examplearrange all the glasses on the right side in descending order of glass height. Water should generally be served in the tallest glass, and therefore the water glass should be closest to the plate.
If you are serving more than one course, consider adding additional silverware, especially forks. Like pieces of silverware should be grouped (all forks on the left, all knives and spoons on the right) and placed in the order they will be used, starting with the outside. Thus, if your first course is a salad, place the salad fork on the outside left. Finally, a small bread plate or shallow side bowl makes a nice touch. Place this dish on the left above the forks along with any suitable silverware, such as a butter knife.
