Iridescent and Irresistible: Paua Shell (Abalone) Rings

What's that on your finger? It almost looks like an abstract water color painting, but much smaller of course! The colors are eye-catching and range from intense purple to soothing blue and even some glowing green. Look at that, the colors can even change when viewed at different angles. There also appear to be flowing black lines separating the colors. Wow, we could stare at it all day. Wait, is this a paua shell (abalone) ring? Indeed it is!

This iridescent beauty is known as a paua shell - it comes from an abalone, which is a marine snail. That's right, the shells of abalone have a thick inner layer with nacre also known as mother-of-pearl. This layer features the (above mentioned) colorful blend with a beautiful iridescent glow. Each shell has different color patterns and the black lines you see actually come from the layers of protein that are laid down between the layers of calcium that make up the shell. The brilliant colors come from light being refracted within the layers. This pretty and unique blend makes it perfect for jewelry.

Now that you've spent some time browsing through our brilliant collection of paua shell rings, don't you think your selection would look perfect paired with a sterling silver bracelet or a simple chain necklace? We certainly do!
