Grab Some Attention With Our Extreme Peridot Necklaces

Extreme and green. That almost rhymes, right? Close enough. Found in lava, meteorites and deep deep within the Earth’s mantle, peridot is truly an extreme gem. Peridot is prized for its restful yellow-ish green color and also for its extensive history. Some pieces of this gem can be spectacular, due to its strong color. The pieces that are used for jewelry, like necklaces, are attractive but smaller and are seen at many different price points.

The ancient Egyptians called peridot the “Gem of the sun” and mined it from the Red Sea island of Zabargad. When set in gold, they believed that it protected its owner from terrors in the night. Others would string peridot on donkey hair and tie it around their left arms to keep away evil spirits. Another fun historical fact about peridot is that some historians believe that Cleopatra’s famous emerald collection might actually have been peridot. Many other historic pieces that were once thought to be emeralds are indeed actually peridot.

In 2005, peridot was found within comet dust that was brought back from the Stardust robotic space probe. That definitely verifies how extreme this gem is. Check out our extreme collections of peridot in our Gems en Vogue and Gems Insider brands. Please try not to confuse it with emerald, like Cleopatra may have. She has definitely dropped out of my top three favorite Pharaohs of all time now.
