Top Layers of Bedding

Comforter
A comforter is a decorative top layer that usually comes with coordinating pillow shams or accent pillows. Comforters are filled with layers of material, often polyester batting, cotton batting or feathers. The comforter is stitched to keep the filling in place and evenly distributed. The thickness of the filling material determines the weight and the warmth of the comforter.

Duvet & Duvet Cover
Duvets are filled with layers of material. A common fill is down feathers, but other options are polyester batting or wool. Duvets are commonly plain white and are used as inserts for a colored or patterned duvet cover. Duvet covers are decorative and protect the duvet from stains and spills. Duvets are usually sold separately from the duvet cover. If you change bedding for the season or you like to change up your style, a duvet and duvet cover may be a great fit for you.

Quilt
Quilts are commonly made with three layers: a top and bottom layer of woven fabric with batting in the middle. The three layers are stitched together in a decorative pattern. The top layer of quilts is usually constructed from many different fabrics, while a single piece of fabric is used for the bottom layer. Quilts can also be used as throw blankets and/or hung on walls as decorations.

Coverlet
Coverlets are lightweight bedding that can be used as a decorative layer over thicker or warmer bedspreads. Coverlets with a thin layer of batting make them warm enough to use on their own. They are usually quilted with a stitching technique that creates ornate patterns, such as geometric or floral designs. Often, coverlets are sold with coordinating shams.

Blanket
Blankets are usually made of one or two layers of fabric with no fill or batting between the layers. They are usually made to fit the bed.

Throw
Throws are usually made of one or two layers of fabric with no fill or batting between the layers. They are used on sofas and beds for decoration and warmth. Many throws have decorative trim, such as fringe or bound edges. Measurements are usually 60" x 50" but can certainly vary.
