How does a pressure cooker work? It's actually pretty simple - much like the technology used to propel those big steam engines - with a blast of build-up heat. In this case, pressure is created by bringing to a boil any liquid inside the closed pressure cooker. The trapped steam increases the internal pressure and temperature. Once food is cooked, the pressure is slowly released and you are ready to open the cover. So, any food that needs long hours on the stove top or the oven can be quickly and efficiently cooked in a pressure cooker at a fraction of that time - the only thing to remember is to have sufficient liquid to get the steam to built up.

In their most basic form, rice cookers do exactly that – they cook rice! While they don't necessarily speed up the cooking process, they certainly make it easier. All you have to do is measure the rice, add water, and set it to cook. At the end of the cooking period, some of the water will have been absorbed by the rice, while the rest will have boiled off. Once this has occurred, the unit will either switch to "warming mode" or will simply turn off. Rice cookers can also be used to cook hot cereals, desserts and steam vegetables.
