Types of Power
In addition to the different types of machines and their subcategories, there are also three different types of power that an espresso machine uses to force the water through the coffee.
A steam powered machine uses a boiler where the water is heated until it becomes steam that has a high enough pressure to force itself through the finely ground coffee. A pump espresso machine uses a motor-powered pump to produce the right amount of water pressure. These are typically more expensive than steam-driven machines. If you desire a more interactive process, lever or piston machines use a manual lever and pistons to create pressure.
