Exercising a few basic best practices will help prevent kitchen cutlery injuries.
- Keep your knives very sharp. The harder you have work at cutting something, the greater the risk of an accident.
- Don't allow yourself to be distracted when using a knife.
- Never cut towards yourself; always cut away.
- Use the correct knife for the job. For example, don't try to peel an apple with your big chef's knife!
- Never leave your knives in the sink. Either wash them right away, or leave them on the countertop in plain sight.
- When walking with a knife, hold it loosely against your thigh with the point down.
- Don't try to catch a falling knife!
