Top Layers of Bedding

Comforter
A comforter is a decorative top layer that usually comes with coordinating pillow shams or accent pillows. Comforters are filled with layers of material, often polyester batting, cotton batting or feathers. The comforter is stitched to keep the filling in place and evenly distributed. The thickness of the filling material determines the weight and the warmth of the comforter.

Duvet & Duvet Cover
Duvets are filled with layers of material. A common fill is down feathers, but other options are polyester batting or wool. Duvets are commonly plain white and are used as inserts for a colored or patterned duvet cover. Duvet covers are decorative and protect the duvet from stains and spills. Duvets are usually sold separately from the duvet cover. If you change bedding for the season or you like to change up your style, a duvet and duvet cover may be a great fit for you.

Quilt
Quilts are commonly made with three layers: a top and bottom layer of woven fabric with batting in the middle. The three layers are stitched together in a decorative pattern. The top layer of quilts is usually constructed from many different fabrics, while a single piece of fabric is used for the bottom layer. Quilts can also be used as throw blankets and/or hung on walls as decorations.

Coverlet
Coverlets are lightweight bedding that can be used as a decorative layer over thicker or warmer bedspreads. Coverlets with a thin layer of batting make them warm enough to use on their own. They are usually quilted with a stitching technique that creates ornate patterns, such as geometric or floral designs. Often, coverlets are sold with coordinating shams.

Blanket
Blankets are usually made of one or two layers of fabric with no fill or batting between the layers. They are usually made to fit the bed.

Throw
Throws are usually made of one or two layers of fabric with no fill or batting between the layers. They are used on sofas and beds for decoration and warmth. Many throws have decorative trim, such as fringe or bound edges. Measurements are usually 60" x 50" but can certainly vary.

Thread Count
Thread count is the number of yarns per square inch used when a fabric is woven. Higher thread counts create heavier, more durable weaves that generally feel smoother and softer. Lower thread counts can pill and feel rough, but are affordable and aptly serve their purposes. Common thread counts range from 180 to 1,200. A high thread count does not necessarily mean better quality, as it is important to consider other factors like fiber, finishing techniques, yarn size and ply.

Fabrics/Fibers
Sheets can be made from many different fabrications. Various fibers and weaves are ultimately responsible for the particular performance characteristics of a sheet set.

Yarn Size
Yarn size refers to the thickness of the individual threads that make up a woven fabric. The higher the yarn size, the finer the thread. Quality sheets usually have a yarn size ranging from 40 to 100. Finer yarns can only be made from high-quality, long staple cottons such as Supima. Yarn size is important to thread count because finer yarns take up less space than thicker yarns, thus the highest thread count sheets are generally made from the finest yarns.

Ply
The other important component to thread count is ply. Single ply fabrics are made from individually woven threads of yarn, while two-ply fabrics are made from two threads of yarn that are first twisted together and then woven. Since two-ply fabrics have essentially double the thread count of their single ply counterparts, two-ply fabrics must be made from extremely fine yarns, otherwise the end product might feel too bulky and heavy

Sizing
Make sure you have precisely measured your mattress for its length, width and height. Most mattresses are usually made in specific standard sizes, but there is the possibility of slight variances. A 15" fitted sheet pocket depth will accommodate a mattress up to 18" in height. Deep pockets will be required for Eurotop or pillow top mattresses.
