The History of the Nativity Scene

The first nativity display is credited to St. Francis of Assisi in 1223 based on his biography, "The Life of St. Francis of Assisi" by St. Bonaventure, written decades after St. Francis' death. Whether it was true or not, the nativity scene's popularity took off. Over the next few centuries, nativity scenes spread throughout Europe. Later scenes began to incorporate dioramas and a larger cast of figures, including animals, shepherds and the three wise men.
