Spring Hill Nurseries Three-Piece "Thailand Giant Strain" Elephant Ear Set

This huge strain of the giant Elephant Ears is grown from a wild collected seed from Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, in 2003 by former PDN Research Manager Petra Schmidt. In the wild, the plants reached a massive 9' tall, which is much larger than the clone of C Gigantea that we used to grow. Each leaf grows in excess of 5'L x 4'W. Each seedling will differ slightly, but massive plants will be the result.

In foliage, the leaves are an attractive glaucous-grey which is typical of this species. From an early age, the plants are adorned with clusters of dramatically large, pleasantly scented, white flowers. With generous water and feeding, the leaves get as big as small kiddie swimming pools by late summer time. The plant even blooms, producing large, peace lily-like white flowers throughout the season.

As with all elephant ears, "Thailand Giant Strain" is easy to grow. This giant Elephant Ear is easily over-wintered in a sunny window in the house, or can be put in a semi-dormant state in a basement, or in a garage in the South. Be careful not to over water it. You will need to remove most of the foliage to make it manageable. If it is in the ground, pot it up a few weeks before moving it inside to give it time to adjust. Plus growing it in a container keeps the size down. In the ground or a large container, 'Thailand Giant Strain cannot be ignored.

1) Do not remove the paper sleeve that forms the pot that the plant is grown in. The paper pot will degrade on its own after planting.

2) Place the plant in its sleeve directly into the planting hole, with the top of the soil line of the root ball level with the soil surface.

3) Refill with soil mixture. Firm the soil around the plant with your fingers.

4) Water thoroughly. If natural rainfall is less than 1" per week, additional watering is recommended. Be careful not to over-water.

Apply plant food at a rate of 5 lbs per 100 sq. ft. of garden. It is also for use on seeded plantings. After the seeds have emerged, broadcast our general purpose over the desired area at above rate and incorporate into the soil.

Apply a 2-4" layer of shredded bark, compost or other organic mulch around your plants to promote moisture retention, maintain even soil temperatures, and to discourage weed growth.

Keep the area around your plants free of weeds. Weeds compete with all plants for food, water and light. Walk around the garden periodically and pull weeds, including the roots as soon as you see them. Mulch also assists in keeping weeds down.

Improves the size, quality, and color of blooms and maintains a healthy, happy plant for many years. Remove spent blossoms or leaves to promote additional blooming or growth. Pinch or cut-off the blooms when they have faded, but leave as much foliage as possible. Keep the center of any bush open for air circulation by pruning off inner branches and any that are damaged or unsightly.

Add 1 tablespoon to soil in hole and mix thoroughly before planting the transplant. Scratch fertilizer at above rate into surface once they start flowering/fruiting. For existing garden, broadcast around existing plants and incorporate into soil at the above rate. Apply at the beginning of growing season and again when plants start to bear vegetables.

Hardy in zones 8B or higher. Must be dug and stored in other zones. If grown in a container move indoors to an unheated garage and water sparingly over the winter.
